Our mother – Jenny – was a fabulous home cook and baker. Before she was struck down by an incurable chronic disease at the age of 49, she responsible for the all the baking and cooking in a busy restaurant which specialised in high teas.
She was brought up in a country cottage 8 miles from the county town of Ayr. Her father was a farmworker and her mother stayed at home raising 4 sons and 1 daughter. Baking for her family was more than a need it was a passion. Her recipes were handed down from her mother and her grandmother before her.
We actually own our great grandmothers original rolling pin which as its made of wood and holds a sentimental place in our heart but is not in use today
When we were small we always baked along with our mum at the kitchen table. Shortbread, shortcrust and puff pastry, pies, puddings such as eves pudding, apple crumble, scones, pancakes, tattie scones, clootie dumplings for every birthday (we are a family of 6) and much more were staples in our household.
When our mum died in 2002 at the age of 80 her passing left a great void in our lives. She was an inspirational woman and had always encouraged us to open a food related business when she was alive.
Ellen had been her main carer for the last 10 years and I (Frances) was working for a company based in Holland and had spent many years travelling the globe working for multi-national electronics companies in various roles. 6 months after Mums death we decided to honour her memory by opening a bakery – thus the Dessert Depot was born in October 2002. We opened our doors for business January 3rd 2003 and have never looked back.
In 2011 a little sister was born – The Handmade Cheesecake Company. This company is the retail arm of The Dessert Depot.
Today we are located in a 4000’ sq ft production unit on the outskirt of Ayr close to the A77 and 30 miles south west of Glasgow. We make a range of Traybakes, Cakes and Cheesecakes which are sold direct to coffee shops, restaurants and local and national Foodservice companies. Our pastry and shortbread is still made to the same recipe our mum used.
We strive continually to innovate and pride ourselves in our creative and traditional range of products. Our quality speaks for itself – we have customers which have been loyal to us since 2003. In 2007 we were amongst the first companies in Ayrshire to achieve SALSA accreditation, we have retained this every year since.
